Canton ny Wedding

Canton is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, USA. The population was 10,334 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Canton in China (now named Guangzhou).

The Town of Canton also contains a village named Canton.

The town was organized in 1805. The name Canton was supposedly selected due to contemporary interests in the China trade. Canton was one of the original ten towns of the county.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 274.3 km (105.9 mi). 271.4 km (104.8 mi) of it is land and 2.8 km (1.1 mi) of it (1.03%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,334 people, 3,198 households, and 2,011 families residing in the town. The population density was 38.1/km (98.6/mi). There were 3,515 housing units at an average density of 12.9/km (33.5/mi). The racial makeup of the town was 94.60% White, 2.66% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.63% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.39% of the population.
